The easiest explanation for this has to with people believing themselves to be both very important and to be constantly under threat from others. They believe that their personal reputation and everything concerning their identity is worth protecting more than anything else, hence why any sign of disrespect towards it is thought of as a target for confrontation by them.

What they need is humility and self-pacification.
