Newspapers tell you that he was a tranny but what they don't tell you is that he was nothing like today's trannies. Marsha called himself a gay man and never demanded people to use she/her pronouns for him. At the time all the people that called themselves transsexuals were like Marsha: gay men effemminated to the point that they were more comfortable presenting as female but never deluded enough to think that they were real women, they thought of themselves as queers, transvestites.
Then at some point the medical community decided that being gay is not a requisite to be considered transsexual and to medically transition and transbians became a thing. Today they represent the 70-80% of the transsexual population. You know the rest of the story.
Transbians are quite literally heterosexual males with predatory tendencies and it is indeed very controversial and paradoxical that they're considered part of the LGBT community.
