Eso es por legado histórico de la pronunciación de la "x"/"j" como "sh" en español (antiguamente se escribía "ejército" como "exercito" y "caja" como "caxa"). Cuando México fue conquistado, su grafía reflejaba la pronunciación del nombre nahuatl "meshiko" bien, pero con el pasar de los siglos, ocurrió el cambio fonético del sonido de la "j" hacia "kh".

Bueno, tampoco es como si fuera hecho poco conocido, pero asumo que como siempre, cada persona piensa que su propio acento es el correcto en el idioma que habla, así que sin importar de lo que diga, seguramente dirás que no significa nada para ti.
