You either keep adjusting yourself accordingly to every situation and learn all the tricks, especially how to seem like you don't care, how to read the room, etc or you perish. It involves so many specifics that it pretty much is just a matter of being naturally charming or not.
I don't think people really "pretend" most often. It's more so that they expect to gain something from associating with you and then they might turn against you if they don't get that. Such people are often at a disadvantage though because they're more invested in it than you. So they're more likely to be in a losing position from the start. Just showing that you don't care is most often enough. Most often people don't get told to follow, so you can just say that you never made them do anything and it's their own fault for setting up unrealistic expectations.
