You can get genuinely rich from the latter, but their volatility means you can go straight back to poor again just as quickly if you don't cash out at the right time. Personally I wouldn't put any money into cryptocurrencies that I wouldn't be willing to blow on lottery tickets instead.
If you had $7k to lose though that probably means you're already better with money than most people - get back to saving and opt for more traditional investments next time eh? The best ways to make good money are still already having lots, wise investment (as in hiring someone who knows more than you to manage it), and going into business for yourself.
