Eating whole foods, including whole grains, will help optimize your nutritional intake. Most of the diet should be fruits and vegetables, meat is fine (seafood is very healthy). Good genes, calories-in-calories-out, and wholes foods will be what determines your health. Realistically, a lot o studies are indicating an overwhelming impact from genes, so really we're just trying to sustain rather than build good health, just don't fuck up what you have, thus controlling calories-in-calories-out is probably one of the most important aspects, eat low calorie and nutrient dense whole foods (don't take it to extremes, and keep it varied) and exercise. After that, nature will do what it does.
