You see the people who introduced Jim Crow laws and the people who introduced the reactionary laws afterwards, are both playing out the archetype of Cain from the story of Cain and Abel. Rather than being humble and putting faith in God's work (or "Nature's design" if you prefer), they prefer to try to shape the world in their own image (their own conception of what is "ideal").
