Everyone says this "muh states rights" crap when it doesn't accomplish that goal at all. California and New York still have significantly more votes than South Carolina and Rhode Island. People like to go on about states rights because the electoral college just so happens to coincidentally work out in favor of conservatives whom would otherwise be in the minority.
The college was literally created because the founding fathers thought Americans were too dumb to decide their own leader through direct democracy.

Not just voters.
Only thing that ruins it is the winner take all system.
Allocate the electors proportionately and the problem is fixed.
I believe the entire past to post system has a huge ass problem in general

yes it does you retard. It ensures small states has a voice, while acknowledging that larger states DO have more population and thus get more votes all in all. In larger states the individual voter's vote worth less than the smaller state. This is balanced by larger state getting more electoral votes

because the # of states electoral votes represent the states population (everyone)
Non-voters are counted
In a popular vote system:
The # of votes in a state only represent voters, not the whole state.
So those who didn't vote for non-political reasons (being sick, storm, etc.) won't be represented.

Why don't we go by popular vote instead of allocating proportionately:
Because represent the nation not just voters.

One thing switching to proportional allocation would make the election more vulnerable to fraud, but so does switching to popular vote

Let me try again through a story
Texas votes republican 60-40 and has a high turnout of 80 percent
New York votes democratic at a much larger margin of 70-30 but has a lower turnout of 30 percent because of a threat against voters or something that keeps people from voting

Just to keep things simple New York and Texas have equal population and number of electoral votes.

In the popular vote system the republican would've won.

In the electoral collage with proportionately allocated electorial votes
You assume the non voters vote like the voters did.
In this scenario the democrats would have won.
Everyone would be represented

Can we also talk about how the members of the electoral college do not have to vote how the people they represent vote? For example, if one county votes Republican, the member of the electoral college representing that county can LEGALLY vote Democrat instead, and that will count in the presidential election. The only repercussions that member will face is a hefty fine. So in America, you vote can actually not count at all. While it has never been obviously exploited to alter the course of an election, it is a major loophole in the electoral college system in the US
