>>129447111. Teleological Argument or Watchmaker Argument.
Lets start with the Watchmaker Analogy. Yes, this is not an argument this is an analogy posed as an argument and I am even ashamed to write this non sequitur in argumentative form to refute it. It’s laughably invalid.
P1. Watch is complex.
P2. Watch has a designer.
P3. Universe is complex.
(and now brace yourself for non sequitur)
C. Therefore Universe has a designer.
Of cource this is a FALSE ANALOGY.
Universe is not a watch. Thus we can’t attribute qualities of the watch to the universe. I can show it with an example.
P1. Watch is complex.
P2. Watch was made in 15th century.
P3. Universe is complex.
C. Therefore, Universe was made in 15th century.
Ok, lets remodel this “argument” to get rid of the non sequitur.
P1. Everything that is complex has a designer.
P2. Universe is complex.
C. Therefore, Universe had a designer.
But, unfortunately, this argument has 6 more massive flaws.
A) First premise is false. Not everything that is complex has a designer. For example, we, humans, our eyes, our ears - all come from nature, courtecy of natural selection.
B) Imagine a smarphone. A smartphone is complex. But different parts of it are made by different designers. Thus premise one is false since not everything that is complex has a designer. Or rather, not just one designer.
C) Designer of a watch did not create the watch ex nihilo, from nothing. He rearranged materia. So the correct first premise would be “everything that is complex is designed by a designer through rearranging materia”. (thats of course if we don’t count A and B flaws) Thus this premise and its conclusion (universe was created by rearranging materia) not only does not prove God’s existence but is outright incompatible with Christian ontology.
