very strange situation for sure
yeah, it's a bit wild to be honest. i like d&d a lot and combat is one of the parts i like more about it, but it's such a fucking slog to get through sometimes. rolling a die, adding numbers together, or referencing stat blocks only takes a second or two but it adds up REALLY fast when even a simple character's turn looks like this
>roll a d20>add your attack modifier>does that hit?>if yes roll a different die>add your damage modifier>do all that again for your second attack>move your character, allowing a monster to attack you by going through all the same stepsand again i have to stress this is a simple character. spell casters usually need to review what a spell does, read it out to the DM, and do more description of what their actual intent is before they can move on to all the rolling.
this is all on top of the fact that being a turn based game you have very little to do when it's not your turn. so you do your shit then sit around until it gets back to you or an enemy hits you.
it's entirely common for people to totally zone out or get distracted talking when it isn't their turn, which slows things down even more because then they might need to ask questions like "oh how much damage has this thing taken again?" or "where exactly did that thing i was hitting move to?" before even starting to decide on what to do
in the end i really do enjoy it, there's a reason things are the way that they are, and spelling it out like this makes it seem worse than it actually is but i'm beyond positive that there's a much much better way of going about this stuff
goodnight
