The only liquor store owner I knew personally failed miserably because he was an alcoholic. So I guess the lesson there is don't use your own product. Not even the really expensive stuff. Not even if you have some elaborate fucking ritual that slows your consumption down. Not even if you say I'm only going to drink on these special occasions. I can tell you funny anecdotes working for the LCBO which is the gov't run liquor store here.

For some reason Black Carribean people really love this sweet jewish wine called Manchewitz or something like that to a point where if I saw a black person enter the big store I worked at there was 90% chance they would buy it.

Another funny thing is that the manager of the store I worked at being a huge as fuck liquor store in Toronto, the guy basically looked like a stereotypical hick with bad teeth and a combover like something you would see out of a western movie showing a miner or southern slave owner but the guy was decently intelligent and would pull out like 100$ of port wine for us to drink in the break room just saying its expensive grape juice. Idk it was just comical to experience.
I think that once people get seniority in a position they just let their looks go and dont give a shit.

Its unfortunate that it was only a seasonal temp position because it was a cool job.

For all the anti-multiculturalism stuff you guys promote its fun interacting with all sorts of people and we never had a problem with any customers or crime.

That shit happens all the time to bar owners too. They buy a bar cause they want a fun place to hang out and drink for free, only to realize they have to run an actual business.
It might work if they put a decade or two of solid investment into the place and built up a solid clientele base that has loyalty, so they can autopilot it a little, but otherwise bars/restaurants burn money even at the best of times.

In the 90s and early 2000s I'd go to the store just to say hello. More than once cops pulled over and asked if I knew where I was. I felt fairly safe because there was a drug dealer and his crew that sold on the corner and controlled the block. It was a little scary because I never knew if shit was going to suddenly pop off or a drive by would happen.

the word liquor is repugnant to upper class people; they wouldn't want to be seen in such an establishment

your best bet is going for selection. a wine and sprits store full of rarer and hard to find stuff is the only thing that might be able to find a niche. You're competing with mail order these days, and frankly, you can get just about anything online, delivered to your door in 24-48 hours.

As far as a liquor store goes, please don't just setup sections for different types of liquor and call it a day. Every liquor store I go to feels like a random warehouse.
Teach me new drink recipes. Set up displays or something. Is Halloween or 4th of July coming up? Arrange some halloween or 4th of july drink recipes with the ingredients right there.
Most people know shit about making drinks but would love to experiment and learn new ones and get ideas for new creations.

Worked at a liquor store in a city that is on the top 30 list of American cities for family income. Also worked at a liquor store in the boons out in the middle of nowhere that only sold to spics, college kids, and blue collar folks. The 'high end' was exactly that, night and day compared to boon store. 90% card transactions, averaging easily over $100 per transaction. On Christmas alone the aggregate count of all the POS systems was 30 grand. So no, wealthy people in the top 1% don't find the term 'liquor store' repugnant, at least in my state. Its quite the opposite.

EBT is the name of the card they used and the payment network behind it. There's two different kinds of benefits that use the EBT card. Harry's Wine and Spirits in Brentwood just went out of business.
This was an established business with a longstanding clientele, with a good selection of premium and upscale brands.
BevMo, Costco, and the local grocery stores put them out of business. Online sellers did the rest.

I'm not saying that there isn't money in booze, but your best profit margins are cash on the barrel head, transactions behind 6" of bulletproof glass selling to the dregs of society from within a cinderblock/brick building that can't be burnt down.
