Any of the main console controllers work well.
ps4, xbox one, and switch pro controllers.
But I haven't tried the newer ps and xbox controllers.

If you're looking for something cheaper, I have no idea. Maybe look for some used console controllers.

Also keep in mind PS4 controllers still use micro usb.
The others use usb-c

Under most circumstances, no.
Maybe for older operating systems, but not windows 10.
And if you're just using it for Steam, I think it automatically recognizes the controllers.
