>>12991124My dad grew up in poverty and became self made thru jumping on the IT train in the 90s as it was exploding.
Whenever we had projects around the house to do, he never told me how to do it, he just told me to get X or Y tool and to get it in .02 milliseconds or he would explode.
Never handed down any of the handyman knowledge except some paltry little fact here and there I had no chance of remembering without the base knowledge of what the fuck we were doing.
Never took me camping or hunting despite having all those skills too.
When I turned 21 or so I had an awakening and decided to teach myself all this shit. It started with fun shit like fishing, hunting, camping, gardening. Now that I’m 27 and married I have been trying to learn wood working, car maintenance, general handiwork house repair. It’s fun in a way, but sucks I had to learn this late.
I’ll never forget my dad angrily saying to both himself and me,”I really failed teaching you practical shit like this.” In between yelling instructions of how to change a tire when I was 19 and got my first flat.
(Btw I’m American, just shitposting from vacation in Serbia)
