In terms of load bearing capacity timber framing is as good as it gets when it comes to strength/weight ratio and price. Steel framing is competitive, sometimes outright better, but not many builders these days are experienced with steel outside of structural steel building like pole barns.

OSB is inferior, so is particle board. I've heard of cheap contractors using particle board even to cut costs.
My comfy rural house is 120 years old and framed with old rough 2x4s and 2x12s with tongue and groove wood plank subfloor on a fieldstone basement.

You use a 4x6 as a bottom plate if you're building a load bearing wall in a basement that hasn't been poured yet. it's a spacer in that situation as your actual bottom plate is being placed on top of it. You run a double bottom if you're pouring gypcrete in commercial for floors, as a double 2x6 is cheaper than using 4x6 posts.

If you have the money to spend, I'm happy to build you a double sheathed wall on exterior and interior. Not only will I build you a home with twice the exterior sheathing and interior wall thickness, but I build true double wall homes. The only real problem here is that developers don't sell quality. They're selling square footage and finish materials. Most people don't care or don't know that sound proofing issues can be addressed, and all thermal efficiency concerns are effectively moot given how incredible modern HVAC is with return and exchange vents.

Buddy if the framing stays dry and the sheathing stays dry its going to stay there practically forever. So long as exposure to moisture is mitigated on all fronts then it will stay standing up. Thats what vapor barrier on exterior sheathing is for.

To answer why we use fasteners instead of joints, go to the southern US where humidity and temperature can vary by 40+ degrees each day. The faggot who built my back porch did an amazing job on everything, then decided to be fancy and do a screen door made of joints. The joints have blown up from water expansion and shrinking and now don’t fit. I nailed the fucker back together as a fix. It’s fucking stupid to use non-modern techniques. He just wanted to show off his carpentry (he was a good wood worker, but a hell of a nigger rigger when he cut corners).

you're going to need enough rain to get through the siding which is going to take fucking hundreds of years, then you still have the waterproof layer under that, which will take another couple hundred, then you have the siding and frame which will still take a couple decades to rot through
