Yes, monkeys can be either +/- as Rh stands for Rhesus macaque monkeys. The Rh, or rhesus, factor was discovered in 1940 by K. Landsteiner and A. S. Wiener, when they observed that an injection of blood from a rhesus monkey into rabbits caused an antigenic reaction in the serum component of rabbit blood.
The rhesus protein is named for the rhesus monkey, which also carries the gene, and is a protein that lives on the surface of the red blood cells. This protein is also often called the D antigen [1].
And while it did get its name from the Rhesus monkey, we didn't get it from them! It turns out that some forms of Rhesus molecules are found in most life forms, ranging from algae to fish to human. Even a few kinds of bacteria have Rh molecules.
Rhesus factor has an even more ancient origin. It’s descended from a molecule called Amt. Amt is found in every living thing -- even in Archaea, which is possibly the most ancient life form on Earth [2].
Amt exists in many life forms as a gas distribution molecule. You only have Rhesus blood group if you have Rh antigens on your red blood cells.
For example, the worm C. elegans has Rh molecules. But since they don’t have red blood cells, they cannot have Rhesus blood type! In C. elegans, Rh just transports ammonia gas out of the worms.
So Rh existed a long time ago, way before humans or monkeys walked on Earth.
