>>12999927The very roots set by Sabino Arana did have that ideology, that Basque people were superior etc, he would go on to found the basque nationalist party which would later win the VAST majority of local elections, they have been in control like 46 of the last 50 years or something, seriously.
It was Sabino that started the whole thing about a Basque nation and the idea, together with terrorism, really had way more social support back when Franco controlled Spain, since terrorism then wasn't only about racial or cultural pride, but also about fighting fascism. Look up "carrero blanco" for a turning point in the country and an example of a math mistake in a bombing plan. He ended up in the roof of a seventh floor, car and everything if I recall correctly.
With the end of the dictatorship the terrorist group lost a fuckload of power and support and slowly went to shit.
Nowadays it still gets mixed opinions, pretty much everybody agrees that killing people was not very cash money, but given the situation some see it as more justifiable than others, also Spain used state-sponsored terrorism against them (with a socialist government, no less) and in the eyes of many that is proof of the repression from Spain that validates the terrorist action taken.
Sorry but I'm skipping plenty, it's 1am here and am phoneposting, also it's honestly a fairly complex issue, us basque people don't even expect other spaniards to understand.
It's great to start pulling jokes about terrorism and seeing them grimace though.
