Some nations are really fascinated about America because all they see is our media or news. When I went to Mongolia they wanted to know why we all shoot each other. Years later I still have no decent answer for this, other than nogs.

I've never been outside of the U.S., but I did hear a friend of my family got kidnapped somewhere in or close to Mexico.

Usually, behavior and conduct marks one as a foreigner. Travel is awesome and you should indulge in as much as you can. It's a massive opportunity for personal growth depending on how much one absorbs the local culture, observe how natives behave, etc.

Tldr nobody really cares if you mention you're American, but Americans can have some faux pas behaviors i.e. tipping when not necessary (road to hell is paved with bad intentions), being loud,not knowing any of the local language,etc.
