L is the identical, contra(not counter) personality of the same individual. He would have corrupted to the same position, and would have only developed that corruption in the opposite direction. He would have also defeated the Death Note to the same end.
L/ight Yagami. Same person in two lives, fighting with himself, impelled by an equally ridiculous unifying circumstance to balance out their didactic upbringings.
