Satan gave us knowledge of good and evil by making Adam and Eve bite the apples from the tree, without him we would have been ignorant. God couldn't prevent it because he wasn't powerful enough.
Satan means "adversary" god wouldn't have called him that if he wasn't a serious threat.

The reason why god talks so much about Satan in his book the bible is that he fears Satan. The only reason he would fear Satan is if Satan was more powerful.
