Suburbs in that pic are almost always governed by what we call "Home Owner's Associations" which are basically little private governments. They ban things that they don't like in order to keep up property values.
I'm certain that a chick coup would never be approved, and freerange chickens are also out of the question.
There is no privacy for these homes. I've seen similar suburbs but with wooden fences everywhere; it looks terrible from above (like a cattle feedlot) but is actually much better to live in.

Neighborhoods like that are generally under the rule of Home Owner Associations which are essentially mafias with more power than the state.
They tell you what color your house can be, what kind of fence you can have,. how tall your grass can be. If you can even have grass, or if you have to have a gravel yard.

All kinds of bullshit. They will literally fine you if you don't comply too.

my family actually did raise chickens when I grew up because the suburb I lived in didn't have a HOA

we had exactly 2 chickens and they produced a metric fuckton of shit, every other week we had to hose down the porch and we couldn't even really play in the backyard because there was just chicken shit everywhere. eventually the neighbors dog dug through the fence and killed them both though.

I live 70 miles north of NYC on a parcel of land larger than your village I'd wager. I own many animals, chickens are a liability with foxes and coyotes roaming wild in gigantic packs. I buy eggs from a farmer across town. I buy milk from another farmer on the same street. Now that I think about it, the only time I go to the grocery is to get alcohol and non-food items like bandages and flatware.

I own many firearms. Use them almost daily. From one end of my property to the next the trees muffle gunshots. okay.

So its not aesthetic or pretty in the least. I would rather own a cabin on 5 arcs outside of a village. But im not particularly wealthy and I have to live where employment is at.

That house in that development gets me a little slice of heaven that I can do whatever I want with at an affordable rate. I would love to live in a German farm house just outside of Kaufbeuren, but I dont have a million in the bank an my job is not over there.
