In Clark v Arizona the supreme court decided that just because someone has evidence of a preexisting condition such as a mental illness it doesn't mean they couldn't form the criminal intent to commit the act.
Chris is obviously mentally ill but not to the point that he was dissociated from the situation entirely. He actively was aware of what he was doing at the time and then went to brag about it to other people. He had a clear plan of action of where to go with his victim and even had future plans.
This is clear as day that he was cognitively aware of what he was doing.
During his evaluation with a psychiatric professional they'll see the same and while it will open some mental health services on the inside it won't reduce his sentence or allow for an insanity plea to keep him out of prison.
He's going to prison.
