You're expecting society to maneuver like a fighter jet, but it's more like a zeppelin blimp. I tend to think of it like a cruise ship going up a creek.
If you push people too fast, the whole fucking system will collapse.
Just imagine a classroom of kids when something happens to upset the status quo like a power outage. Kids start talking, getting up from their desks, walking around, getting anxious, asking to go home or who knows. You simply can't cause disturbances unless people are prepared for them.
