/TG/ - Talmud General - /Pol/ Becomes a Rabbinic Scholar Edition

No.13276501 View ViewReplyOriginalReport
ITT we read the Talmud.
The edition we are going for is that from ArtScroll, offered for free online here at: https://www.sefaria.org/texts
The reasons for this are several:
-It is compiled from many respected Orthodox sources and has NO secular sources whatsoever.
-It is widely used and considered (mostly) a faithful translation. There are detractors, but this seems to be the one that will generate the least amount of "T-T-THAT'S A MISTRANSLATION!"
-It is free and online
-It will prevent people from trying to take something out of context, as the context will be readily available.
How to read the Talmud:
The Talmud has two parts: the Mishnah and the Gemara. The Mishnah is a very legalistic and terse description of what is essentially Jewish law. The Gemara is the discussion, throughout several centuries, of many different scholars. It is important to note that not all of the opinions and stories in the Gemara are generally accepted. They are essentially a collection of dialectical viewpoints, many of which are rejected. Thus one must be careful.
In addition, the Talmud is not really intended to be read cover to cover. It is more like a textbook on various topics, with commentary on those topics from many different sources that jumps around sometimes rather randomly.
Need a reason to study it? Not only are Jewish people not allowed to teach it to you, but Gentiles are technically forbidden to even read it!
