It's the 'normal' Buddhism, relatively speaking. The Pali Canon is still the literary backbone of global Buddhism, but it just isn't as much fun as Tibetan Vajrayana.

that's not what is advised at all
to me it's much closer to something like powerlifting
very similar structure to those two activities, meditating and lifting heavy objects to get stronger
they are both about exercising while juggling other concerns like nutrition, morality, etc

Well, Theravadans don't sit around and do nothing. They tend to be pretty deeply interlaced with their societies, especially in SE Asia where they can become celebrities. Buddhists have festivals and ceremonies. They have communities. The image of the lonely tantric yogi living alone in a cave, deep in meditation is nothing more than a stereotype. No one is actually like that.
