Chinese form multiple words to make one word. And the words they form into a word don't always make sense

星期 (Week) "Star Period"
公交车 (Bus) "Public intersection vehicle"
面包车 (Van) "Bread vehicle"
火车 (Train) "Fire vehicle"
电话 (Telephone) "Electric speak"
牛仔裤 (Jeans) "Cowboy Trousers"

And you just have to memorise all these combos.
