See the programmed smoothies on this board who have swallowed that. The only reason I can afford a house an family in my mid 20’s is because I got my membership right out of school and it allowed me to make 6 figures in my second year as a lighting technician. In comparison you’d be lucky to break $35k as a salaried operator if you work for a news channel or in-house studio. For example, Production Assistants and Covid management personnel make $15 an hour because they aren’t unionized, whereas I make $40/hour for the first 8 hours I work, 1.5x that after 8, and they double my pay after 12 hours. Free hotels, food, and any gear I bring to set I get to charge them a kit rate for which can eclipse my labor rate. It’s insane how much money you can make if you’re part of a union.
