You don't have to go to a church to get closer to God. Read the bible, especially the Gospel, pray daily, ask forgiveness for your sins, and invite the Holy Spirit to live in you.
If you want to go to a church to meet like-minded people there is nothing wrong with that. Going to church isn't going to get you any closer to God than you can get on your own. But you will learn a lot there that you may not learn on your own.
Picking out a church is a matter of personal preference. I suggest trying different churches and seeing which one suits you. You may do well to research denominations online to see what their common practices are before attending. Some of them have some very bizarre dogma that they follow.
To avoid most of the dogma I recommend staying away from these few:
Catholic and Greek Orthodox - Both pray to saints which is the equivalent of idol worship, and function based mostly on dogma.
Presbyterian - They pretend to talk in tongues by wiggling their tongue on their lips. Tongues, according to the bible, is fluently speaking another language that you never learned.
Church of Christ - They don't believe in music in the church, despite the bible stating that David sang and played instruments for God.
Jehovah's Witness - They're the door-to-door knockers that annoy everyone.
Latter Day Saints - Mormons who base their religion on what Joseph Smith claims to have pulled out of a hat, and they support polygamy and originally supported pedophilia.
Seventh Day Adventists - They think Sunday isn't the sabbath.
Baptist, Methodist, Lutheran, Evangelical/Fundamentalist, Anglican, Restorationist, Non-denominational, and bible churches are all fairly normal churches that stay mostly (but not completely) away from dogma and teach from the bible as it is written.
Good luck in your search! And God bless you!
