Whereas most of the time when a gun is used in self-defense, it is never fired, and there is no body. Therefore these incidents can only be estimated. These estimates range from 80,000 incidents per year at the low end, to 4 or 5 million incidents at the high end.
Therefore the purpose of a gun is not killing. Most of the time the gun is used, it is not fired. The purpose of a gun is self-defense. The purpose of a gun is (for example) to give an old lady a chance to defend herself against a strong male home invader.
I would also like to point out that police officers do not have the right to just shoot people willy-nilly. They do not have any more right to kill people than you do. They do not carry guns in order to kill people. Rather, they carry guns because they have a dangerous job and they need to be able to defend themselves. The gun again is a tool for self-defense.
This includes defense of liberties. AS THE PEOPLE OF AUSTRALIA ARE NOW LEARNING. If you do not carry a gun, and the people around you do not carry guns, then someday you will learn the same hard lesson that they are currently learning in Australia.
