Yes, they would have died from eating of the fruit, however if Eve asked God He'd have given her fruit from the tree of life to counter the tree of knowledge, giving Adam and Eve eternal life AND knowledge of good and evil. The garden of Eden is a tragic story of the consequences of not trusting God as a friend to simply ask Him for what you want and trusting Him.

The tree of life is exactly what it reads, a tree that gives fruit which grants everlasting life. God wanted Adam and Eve to eat of the tree of life AND the tree of knowledge, however they failed to trust God to simply ask Him and sinned against Him, dooming humanity to suffering and strife. The message of Eden is very simple, trust and obey God.
