With whites or asians, you can tell at a glance which side they're on, but with a hapa you have to spend the extra time deducing their identity from their unique features, and then determine how you feel about the whole situation. It's the eternal problem with mulattoes. They don't belong, and when they are accepted it's because the group they're in consciously allowed them in, not because they were automatically accepted.
