For me, the trick was not starting at maximum difficulty. Talking to strangers is difficult, if you haven't got much experience with it. Talking with attractive female strangers that you would like to be less strange with is much harder still.
Try practicing starting natural conversations with strangers, male or female, with whom you do not intend to take things further. Once you are more comfortable with this, raise the difficulty. Don't be deterred by failure. These are strangers, and you are building a skill, so there is no reason to feel shame.
