>>13654765well it's a bit of stupidity, but i think the bigger issue is that they're forced out of their depth. since there are so many pathways through american universities the combinations are absolutely endless so it truthfully is a full time job to understand it all.
despite that, the university instead figures a "typical" student won't get screwed over by the mistakes too bad, so they just force the professors to do double duty with this stuff on top of their normal responsibilities. they could often do a better job than they end up with in the end, but it was an impossible task from the beginning.
for example i figured this stuff out because i talked to a study abroad advisor, which is a full time position without any other duties, and the difference in competence was absolutely staggering.
