If they see you first you're dead.
Spawning where you didn't check or haven't checked for several seconds as in Vegas 2 terrorist hunt is good too, but exploitable. Intentionally luring them to spawn behind you, then shooting them. Keeping 2 points where they can spawn, safe other wise, look at one, then turn after around 4 seconds and check the other, culling them. If you force yourself not to cheat like that it's good. Enemies can attack from above or rope in through the windows. Nowhere is safe until cleared, and need to keep moving because they keep coming in.
I've played Stalker and Call of Pripyat with Misery Mod, not sure how much that changed Pripyat. It was best when foggy, then anything could leap out, sound probably how you stayed safe, noticing what wasn't quite right and the trope too quiet maybe. Too quiet meaning all the life is afraid of what's there, hoping whatever predator is there won't pick them or become aware there is prey due to sounds made. Sound of snapping twigs or anything obscured by distance, foliage and wind, subtle but there. Deniable for fools that thing the mind capable of delusion. Whatever's there needs to be worked with.
I liked the kindergarden or low level primary school look. Something about nice surviving strangeness made it feel precious, safe, like what it was for, even with a monster lurking around.
