On a societal level i dont beleive that unions really go hand in hand with classic economic leftism, which is the government enforcing rights of the people via law and enforcing high taxation to support the lower rungs of society.
Which is the opposite of unions, Unions are the people self-governing with force by numbers as a counter-balance to the centralized power that corporations have via accrument of capital. They are kind of like a semi-decentralized form of self government (they do have a centralized structure though).
