Nice OP. I am a home brewer also. Been a little while since my last brew but it's a good hobby to get into if you like drinking.

I ended up doing Sake the most. It's meant to be drank fresh so you can be drinking your own alcohol in under a month where Cider takes fucking 6+ months before it's drinkable.

Brewing beer is retarded AF though desu.

Just curious why it's retarded. I have a buddy who is a full on, $15k+ garage setup of high grade stainless steel equipment with electronic monitoring, all for experimenting with creating delicious beers

He's made some absolutely top notch stuff, refreshing as fuck Czech Pils, some heavier stuff that got some taste from some time in bourbon barrels, Oktoberfest ales with hints of orange -- I don't see why making luxury designer beers at home is so bad

Well you kind of answered your own question without realizing it. Basically, there is two options. One, you spend 15k+ to get all the equipment to do it right and you never recoup your initial investment while working your ass off. If it's just a pure hobby and you have the money / space than sure it's great.

The reality for most home brewers with brewing beer is you spend 6-8+ hours of hard work and cleaning to make a decent/good beer that ended up costing you the same or more for two cases of beer. It's just an extreme amount of work/money for little return. A 5 gallon bucket of beer is a LOT LESS alcohol than 5 gallons of Sake. And brewing cider is literally just applejuice/sugar/yeast and you forget about it for 3 months then bottle it. Don't even have to do a secondary transfer off the yeast etc.
