The name "Baphomet" was a corrupted version of "Muhammad" found in Templar records. It simply referred to the prophet of the religion the Templars fought against. However, the French claimed that it referred to a demon and that the Templars were worshiping it. The reason they did this was because the Templars had just lost the holy land and returned to Europe. The French king didn't like the idea of a bunch of knights who weren't loyal to him loitering around in his territory, and he also wanted to seize their wealth and property.
