I would assume they are useful on /tg/.
The name field is useful in a plethora of different ways, it's just not worthwhile to use it in a retarded fashion like how this thread wants to.
Avatarfagging, however, implies user accounts and reposting of the saaaame images over and over and over and over and over. Really, the biggest argument against namefagging is the majority of namefags are trying to seek recognition when the "heart and soul" of 4chan was anonymity.
