What are the chances of staying motivated to develop my game ?

I have the same fear, but riot will copy your game anyways, but only when its succesful, I guess it would be a good idea to make a few simple games, just so you can train, you have no idea how creative you can get when you make something just for the sake of it, when your mind is not blocked because the thing is too important for you, you can be free to be creative and just have fun.

I want to make some games on godot but I procrastinated some good years by now, I guess I should get my shit started as well.

Work well on low end machines
5+ instance clients at once
I want to ship cross platofrm to android, ios, mac, windows, linux and web. WebGL is deprecated, WebGPU is alpha state so you can't even be sure what to pick for web. Obviously biggest hurdle I don't know how without an engine that can afford jannies for metal, vulkan, webgl, webgpu, js translation opengl, directx.

You're generally better off working within the limits of an existing engine
Making one of your own requires an intense amount of work especially for a first game

Perhaps... I plan to work 2-3 years on this shit. Fact is, the game made in engine exists already, it's called starborne and it's dogshit performance and only works on windows despite using unity

To further expand on this a little so you know what you're getting yourself into. Video game programming is generally harder than any other corporate coding job. For corporate usually your applications can be separated neatly into its parts, you have your database, your UI layout, UI design, and an event system that ties the things together. And each of these can be coded fairly independently. For video games everything is a lot more entangled. There's a fairly rich set of data stored in both your CPU's RAM and your GPU's RAM, and not only are there complex interactions with this data through user input, there's also complex interactions just through the sheer passage of time. All of this can very quickly become a clusterfuck of spaghetti code if you don't very carefully plan out your codebase ahead of time. Something which you don't learn to do until you have at least a few years of good coding experience

I (sort of) finished my game engine (version 1.0). But I haven't built a finished game on top of it (yet) because now I need to gather or create assets which as a programmer I have little experience with yet

And yes the reason I did this is because I had the exact same idea as you. All popular engines are dogshit why not make my own. Learning and gitting gud enough to finish it took me many many years

Yea unreal looks pretty decent. I think I remember it not being free a while ago but you can get a free license now
But isn't it more geared towards small groups trying to make a game that sort of looks AAA? I can't imagine it being the easiest tool for a solo dev starting out

Yes in this case it's a lot more difficult, on the other hand Unity is a trap if you can manage complex projects because it doesn't even have some basic tools. You must rely on the asset store or write everything yourself, I was doing the latter before jumping ship to UE.

My point is it's easier to make a half assed game with Unity than Unreal when you're not a beginner in gamedev and software development in general

I see your point but at the end of the day the game sells and it's a very easy engine to work with, if I could I would make my own engine 100% as I enjoy the tinkering but it's just way out of my level of skill
