"Dark matter" is an X-value in a mathematical equation. So far all our calculations on the size of the universe and the consistency of physical laws indicate that there should be mass in the universe that our technology is unable to detect. "Dark matter" is the placeholder term we've come up for with all this stuff that we literally have no way of interacting with, but the math suggests is there.
There's a lot of really interesting questions about dark matter, including whether it exists or is the result of an error in the math, and this is precisely because dark matter cannot be identified or quantified by modern tools.
