So how were the Franks able to beat their Germanic cousins across the Rhine? First of all, they had a common brotherhood by speaking the same language. I'm sure many of them came over to the Frankish side of their own free will. And because the Franks were positioned in the old Roman Empire, they had a loose economic connection to the greater Europe. They had all those roads, infrastructure, and diplomatic relationships. So I'm certain they were much wealthier and better supported than these Germanic tribes living in the forest.
I would say that Christianity spread with civilization. These two things were associated together. But that doesn't mean that christianity caused civilization, in fact this civilization was established before Christianity.
