We do have indie animators, but getting to pump out movie quality is rare. Something close to that would be On-Gaku but it still had a sizeable team.
I mention people doing shit for free, because that is usually how innovation and passion projects are made. Discoveries, contributing to open source, etc. can have money incentives, but people just do that shit for free. Animators are crazy enough that I can imagine them doing it regardless
