Hell yes it was better. Having a united political front meant that people were at least *united* on something. Granted, a lot of what they were united on was psyop bullshit and very obvious crimes against humanity (See: Letting go Osama because he was a CIA asset, Ruby Ridge, giving weapons to Saddam to gas the kurds, etc)
But that said, it was insanely better to be a part of those times when wealth was plentiful, and anonymity was encouraged. Much of the slide now is due to everyone's thoughts being transmitted at once and the political weather changing by the day. It's a slow death as you watch your world get flushed down the toilet to appeal some political partisans on twitter.
I kind of wish I never got to experience 1998 as I know the balance between freedom and anonymity will probably never get better. It's all been downhill from there each passing year.
