It's funny because in reality its actually the opposite: the X chromosome is the female gene, and the Y chromosome is the male gene, and everyone has an X chromosome. So really, in nature, female is the default, which makes sense because everyone is born of a female, so we all come from females and we all have female chromosomes. It is simply that the Y chromosome overrides the X chromosome whenever it is present. Gender really is binary. We can prove this by examining intersex people. Intersex people who have multiple X chromosomes but only one Y chromosome are born with male genitalia (although with only one testicle instead of two). Intersex people who have only one X chromosome are born with female genitalia. And it's impossible to have more than one Y chromosome because men cannot get pregnant.
