admittedly i do think a big part of it is me not doing an ideal job of explaining the situation explicitly and completely
>raceheh, nothin personnel kid, both sides are humans
basically there's a small village that has been isolated in a permanent winter for generations and has a lot of trouble with monsters. kids start to go out with the hunting groups pretty much as soon as they can hold a bow since the dire conditions make it hard to get nearly enough food. from that point if lil timmy can shoot a deer there's no reason he can't shoot a troll if he's gonna be there when it comes barreling through anyway
the other side is a group of bandits that have essentially been teleported into the same area. since they're trained fighters they could play nice and protect the village which would give them more resources to focus on gathering food, which would offset the extra mouths while making things safer across the board.
unfortunately, they arrived during a troll attack and saw the kids fighting. this has lead them to write off the villagers as complete scum, so they refuse to cooperate. instead they set up their own camp a little ways away, raid the village for their food (since the bandits aren't competent enough on their own), and kidnap the kids to "save" them despite not having the means to keep them sheltered and fed
the original intent was for the bandits to seem as though they had fair reasoning but were wildly overreacting while the villagers were a bit harsh but doing what they have to in order to survive. the players instead basically said "a 10 year old against a troll? yeah those villagers are evil for sure, you've got a point" when shown nothing but hospitality from both camps
just seems like a reasonable solution to the problem doesn't it?
