I know there's quantum theory, quantum mechanics, quantum physics and quantum chemistry. Basically, I understand string theory as just a bunch of dudes forcing their ideas to work by creating dimensions and shit. Seems like a buncha BS to me.
But I'm too stupid to figure it out myself.

quantum field theory is what we use to make testable predictions in particle accelerators and shit like high energy collisions from cosmic radiation hitting the atmosphere. very predictable and precise predictions for almost all known forces and matter.

forces are described by quantum tensor fields. basically a fancy way of saying "assign some values to every point in spacetime, and evolve those values over time according to these fancy equations. you can use that to figure out the probability that X will occur given some initial conditions." matter is similar, but it is described by spinor fields, which are a bit more complicated than tensors. point excitations in the fields are called particles.

electromagnetism, etc., are described by rank-1 tensors, aka vectors, and can be quantized. problem with gravity is that its field is a rank-2 tensor (so instead of 4 values for every point in spacetime, you need 16 values for gravity). when you try to quantize it you start getting nonsensical results and infinities everywhere. string theory attempts to solve this by making particles 1-dimensional strings instead of 0-dimensional points. this gets rid of the infinities, makes a whole bunch of interesting connections between other areas of physics, seems to make a whole lot of sense on paper as you go through it.

problem is in order for it to work it requires a bunch of extra dimensions that we do not see. and in the 50 or so years we've been at it, no testable predictions have come from it. not really too surprising given that the energy scales needed to test these areas of physics are many orders of magnitude larger than anything humanity is capable of currently. but it also means there's no real reason to believe it's anything other than a math circlejerk.

Physicists in the 20th century discovered that light sometimes behaved like a particle and that things they thought were particles behaved like waves sometimes (like electrons interfering with eachother or themselves). Basically, yes, that's what string theory is. However, string theory is an attempt to unite quantum mechanics with general relativity (read: gravity), because the way those theories are currently, they don't work together and create paradoxes.

adding to what this anon said, the answer to whether forces and matter are actually waves or particles, the answer is waves. more precisely, when you excite a quantum field we call these excitations "particles," but in reality they are excited states of a quantum field. it's confusing terminology that evolved as the we learned more, but when modern physicists talk about particles they are not talking about little marbles or anything you can actually visualize or easily intuit.

i read all of that from various physics textbooks, leaf. Klauber's QFT book is the best intro if you have background knowledge of non-relativistic QM, i.e. basic Schrodinger equation shit. Learning general relativity first will help a lot as well, because of familiarity you'll get with 4-vectors, tensors, etc.

Quantum Electrodynamics is probably the physical theory that has been tested and confirmed the most of any scientific theory. It describes quite a lot really really well. Get Richard Feynman's legendary book "QED" for an easy to understand introduction.
The main problem with quantum theory is that there is no working quantum theory of gravitation. What describes gravitation best is the General Theory of Relativity.
The main problem with Physics as a whole is, that Relativity and Quantum mechanics don't go together. So either one of the two Theories needs to be corrected in way to accomodate for that. Or possibly both are wrong and we need something new entirely to replace both.
This is what Theoretical Physicists have been working on for the last 50 years.
This is where ideas of "quantum gravity" and "string theory" and-so-on-and-so-forth get invented.
So far none of those new theories was able to predict anything that could actually be measured or confirmed. Physics has been stuck in a rut for a long time.
Unfortunately being stuck in a rut has so far convinced no-one to actually do anything different. All they do is come up with more and more absurd ideas conceived in old ways and built on old opinions and superstitions of how physics *should* work. This is where the whole forced BS comes in.
There's a great talk by Sabine Hossenfelder going into more detail of that, I basically summarized the outline of it. Unfortunately I haven't seen an English version of that talk.
But look up her youtube channel, most of it is short presentations in English.

CERN can't do shit that isn't already happening in the upper atmosphere. high energy cosmic ray collisions with the atmosphere are on much higher energy scales than CERN can produce.

Also the whole thing about "Dark Matter" and "Dark Energy" might just evaporate into nothing if antimatter does not gravitationally attract like "normal" matter does. If antimatter tended to drift apart instead of clumping together it would explain a whole lot about why the observed universe looks the way it does. They're just about to measure that at CERN, but they had a few setbacks in connection to the latest "long shutdown" of the Large Hadron Collider, and the whole Corona-Situation.
Keep your eyes peeled for those results. There's probably some Nobel Prize in there.

GR is not outdated yet, because it is currently the most accurate picture we have for gravity, however we know that there must be a more fundamental set of rules that governs both gravity and particle physics. The way you can think of it is that GR is an approximation of how things are in the large scale and QM is an approximation of how things are at microscopic scales.

Quantum field theory is certainly "wrong" in that it is inherently incompatible with gravity.

They are "wrong" in the same sense that Newtonian gravity is "wrong" - at the scale of our solar system, Newtonian gravity accurately describes the motion of the planets (except Mercury). It is only when things start moving near the speed of light, or near very strong gravitational fields that you need to start using GR to get accurate predictions. If you've ever done Taylor series in calculus, you can think of it as taking the first two terms of the Taylor series of cos(x), throwing out the rest, and using that to calculate cos(x). As you start moving further from 0, the approximation gets worse until it eventually becomes worthless. Newtonian gravity is basically the same thing, as a Taylor series of GR, and throwing out the higher order terms.

In the same way, some other as-yet unknown theory will be more accurate than GR, but effectively equivalent to GR at macroscopic scales.

The word quantum itself is a plural of 'quanta,' or an amount. It's because each little release of energy of photons from atoms, or radioactive particles, happens in some measurable discrete amount. There are no half-jumps from a set higher to a set lower state of energy for an electron around an atom.
The core of quantum theory is a large set of unsettling conclusions: the universe is not deterministic, matter is constantly in flux, retro-causality exists. This all is true but it's only demonstrable at minute scales; the magical point at which an object becomes a "macro-object" and thus seems to follow a different set of rules doesn't actually exist.

tl;dr version - when you get down to extremely small scales, there are three distinguishing differences between how matter and energy operate compared to classical scales:
1. Physical properties are discrete instead of continuous.
2. Physical properties are probabilistic instead of deterministic.
3. Matter exhibits particle-like and wave-like properties simultaneously.

Everything that comes out of quantum mechanics stems from these three fundamental differences or the combinations of these differences. It explains why the light emitted by excited gasses takes on very specific and identifiable wavelengths. It explains why chemistry works. It explains why radioactive decay occurs and behaves the way it does. etc etc etc. As scale increases, and the number of particles increases to absurd orders of magnitude you get back to a classical scale and all of these discrete and probabilistic features get washed out in the statistical averaging.

All of this has been pretty solidly supported by theory and experimental data since the 50s and 60s. More recent developments like quantum electrodynamics (describing quantum mechanics in a way which is consistent with special relativity), electroweak theory (resolving how to describe the electromagnetic and weak interactions as a single model) are also very well supported at this time. Quantum chromodynamics (the attempt to describe the strong interaction and the behavior of quarks) has started getting its first good experimental support in the last couple decades, but isn't quite to the point where most particle physicists would be absolutely confident about it.

Everything after that point should be taken with a grain of salt. Attempts to develop a unified model for the electromagnetic, weak, and strong interactions together have a long way to go, and theories trying to unify these three with the gravitational interaction so far have been nothing but pure-math explanations like string theory which has so far failed to develop any testable hypotheses. It's entirely plausible that the three particle-propagated forces aren't reconcilable with gravity, but so far the evidence doesn't lean either way.

If you want more specifics shoot - I'm just sitting in my office waiting for papers to come in so I've got time to kill.

I don't think you understand what an interpretation is. It's not a theory, it does not make predictions, the math is all the same no matter your interpretation. That's why I said determinism is not inherently ruled out by QM.

That's simply not true. Hidden variables has nothing to do with many worlds at all. Many worlds requires no hidden variables, it is just an interpretation of the exact same math.

Accurate. In fact that's the only reason G shows up in the Einstein Field Equations. The results for generalizing special relativity to accelerating frames spits out some constants, which are solvable if you assume the limiting cases reduces to Newton's result.

Read a book that addresses the quantum world through spectroscopy. That's where the weird rules about the very small were first elucidated. You can't understand quantum mechanics until you understand spectroscopic results. At least that's how it was with me. A book on spectroscopy was the closest to a working explanation for me as anything.

A normal computer operates on a binary principle: power, and no power.
At a threshold the transistor flips open and you get a signal which represents the 1.
Below it the transistor is shut and you get a 0.
Logic circuitry is designed to react in certain ways to the voltage and the lack thereof.
This however limits it to just two values. On and off.

Quantum computing works with qubits, which is the same idea in principle: on or off.
What makes it different is the possibility to interpret it as both on and off.
If you have a logic circuit that can interpret the both, what you get is trinary code. 0, 1, 2. That allows for exponentially more complex calculations, more efficient calculations, quicker calculations all at the same time.
But it won't end there. After all if you can interpret as both, you can also interpret neither. 0, 1, 2, 3.

I'm looking forward to the science guys who'll post all about how that's not how quantum computing works right now, because they're right, it doesn't work like that right now.
Quantum physicists are trying to fit quantum compute into the binary backend.
But the possibilities with it are endless.

It doesn't attract to normal matter. Antimatter and matter repel eachother with something i call the Repulsive Force. In fact, many of the galaxies you can see are totally antimatter, and work exactly the same as normal galaxies.

A while back, some physics fags like myself did some papers on the movements of galaxies and found out that about 30% of the movement of galaxies cannot be explained by MONDs.
What I call the "Repulsive Force" can explain the remaining movement, and you can infer which galaxies are antimatter and which are normal. You can even explain things like the "Dark Matter Halos" other physicists like myself claim to see in galaxy collisions.

All of this requires a bunch of gay math, but trust that dark matter will be a thing of the past very shortly. Screen cap if you care, it doesn't change a whole lot, except that I have managed to solve the baryonic asymmetry problem.

Yeah you'll need a solid foundation before any of it will make sense. If you're interested in learning, here's what I did:

1. Newtownian mechanics (calc-based, or you'll constantly be wondering where these equations are coming from / how they are derived).
2. Lagrangian/Hamiltonian mechanics. It might seem like just a redux of Newtonian, but it becomes much more important/relevant later.
3. Electromagnetism. Maxwell's equations, etc.
4. Special relativity. Spacetime Physics by Taylor & Wheeler would be my recommendation.
5. General relativity. Technically more difficult than basic QM, but sets up the mathematical foundation to move onto QFT from QM. Schutz's textbook would be my recommendation.
6. QM. Never really found a textbook I liked much, but I used Griffith's.
7. QFT. Klauber's textbooks are by far the best pedagogically.

Keep in mind going through all of these took a few years, but I was not a physics major so was doing it in my free time to satiate my own curiosity.

Light follows the principle of least time when passing through mediums like air and glass. The actual path it takes is the path the minimizes the time to get from A to B. It bends because it travels faster/slower depending on the medium, and the optimal path changes thus changes.

This is actually a special case of the more general principal of stationary proper time from relativity. Which is basically a least action principal, which appears all throughout physics.

Sure, you could expect some cosmological noise perhaps, but again I don't recall. On the flipside, you could approach any Dark Matter Physicist, who wants that 2 billion Euro grant from the EU for and even biggerer particle accelerator, and ask them to give one predicted attribute of dark matter(other than it has mass and doesnt interact with electromagnetism) and they would flounder like primary school students.
My team's work is more concerned with the Repulsive Force, MONDs and the predictions we can make using both. Every day we examine the vectors of galaxies and map them to others and compare them to predictions, and the results are more than promising.

Light is an electromagnetic wave - electric and magnetic fields oscillating as they travel through space. Electromagnetic fields propagate differently through different substances (because quantum shit)

Depending on the level at which you're looking at the problem (undergraduate, graduate, etc) the explanation varies slightly. At the undergraduate level you talk about the speed of light in a vacuum being c and the speed of light in a non-vacuous medium being slower than c, and the path of the light bending as its velocity changes going into different mediums. At the graduate level you talk about the need for the electromagnetic fields to remain continuous as they transition from one medium to another and parts of the wave (like the frequency, wavelength, and direction of propagation) have to adjust, which has the same effect as the undergraduate level explanation, but with more gross details.

And then there's the quantum level explanation which gets into all sorts of gross details about photons interacting with molecules and absorption and reemission and other shit I never bothered learning because I really *really* hate quantum mechanics and spectroscopy and so on. Can't help you there.

* Finally there was something observed for the first time. That, and the Higgs Boson are basically the only progress physics have made over the last 50 years. And both have been predicted for a long time. So actually nothing new at all. But it explains the hype around it.
* There's some debate about the validity of the measurements, some things seem to look a bit fishy. Personally I haven't looked into it deeper, I'll wait for it to pan out one way or the other eventually.
* Lots of hype about revolutionary new telescopes on the horizon using GW to look at the universe... Yeah, no, I'm not gonna hold my breath for that, considering the difficulties in constructing the detectors they now have. (I heard a lecture on that by an engineer who was involved.)

Well, it's been undisputed, that GR is very good for some things. Only the formulae break down in extreme conditions and give meaningless results like the famous "singularities". I mean engineers all over the world are usually very happy still using Newton's laws although they have been proven inaccurate in extreme cases. Future theories will have to account for everything GM explains well and everything QT explains well.

In reality quantum is what is able to explain the outcome of events. Quantum theory and the non-quantum physics theory, is that every event has a predetermined outcome, that nothing is random. If a particle doesn't choose to annihilate, whichever mechanism of annihilation it possesses or resorts to, it will follow a path which may to itself seem arbitrary, outcome after outcome, but in reality is the path of the most probably momentum

I’ll try to give a layman’s explanation of QM.

The idea behind Quantum Mechanics is that on tiny scales, instead of being continuous like classical mechanics, things like energies of a harmonic oscillator (think of a swinging pendulum) or emissions of light are discrete (we say they are quantized). This means that they have separated levels, like a series of steps vs a ramp. If I have a classical pendulum, I can get any energy level I want by changing the mass or making it swing faster. But in quantum mechanics we can’t do that. The energy levels are separated and you can’t go between them. It’s like taking the stairs. You have to jump between them. There were 2 things that got people to question classical mechanics at tiny scales, those were Max Planck’s results on radiation, and the Stern Gerlach experiment on spin angular momentum. As it turns out, these things were quantized. German Physicists and the English physicist Dirac used linear algebra to make a theoretical model where the discrete values for things that are quantized are represented by eigenvalues, so that we can have these separated measurement values. This will make sense if you know some linear algebra.

Another thing about QM is that the outcomes of things are based on probabilities, rather than determinism. Unlike in classical mechanics, you can’t predict exactly what will happen next. Nothing is deterministic unless you subscribe to extremely autistic philosophical notions of determinism. When we ‘observe’ (test it) something we are catching it in one of the possible outcomes it can take according to probability.

Due to things being probabilistic, when we catch something in one of its outcomes this changes the state to that outcome. So we lose information about the other possibilities. The theory is very well verified, much of modern semiconductor technology depends on quantum theory. There’s a lot of popsci out there, as well as autistic physics theories. But that isn’t QM. Some Reddit fag or black science man blabbing about Rick and Morty parallel universes and string theory isn’t QM. QM is legit. QFT and QED are theoretical models that try to explain stuff like electrodynamics at quantum scales which require you to take QM effects into consideration.

This is the half-understanding that has stalled out fundamental physics for 100 years. Accurate theories should always produce intuitive understanding because they are explaining a hidden process. It's like trying to analyze a piano as a black box. CERN is the start (and recorder) of the "www" domain (and probably more at this point). Basically the internet as you know it today has its roots in CERN and probably still goes through there to be analyzed and recorded. Other than this they continue the charade of taking big electromagnets and super cooling them to produce fantastical electromagnet effects which they then for some reason go on to call "discrete particles".
