I, personally, don't really immerse myself into video games that often, especially games where a character is creatable. My ambition with gaming is to test my hand-eye coordination and reflexes, especially against others. And, I would say on average, most males playing games are interested in a competitive aspect of the game they're playing. Because of this, the character creation is merely an aesthetic choice a male might make to relieve some of the stress that comes with preparing to compete against others.
As for women, that's a whole 'nother story. Women actively avoid competition within the same sex, while actively encouraging the opposite sex to compete against each other -- particularly if it's to gain some kind of brownie points with said woman. Because of this, women are terrible at video games. With no reason or drive to be successful, women are left merely vying for the opposite sex's attention by choosing a female character. Their primary interest in the game is social. The male, however, has practical interests in the game and its mechanics.
