>>14119268they don't know how much hp the boss has. more experienced players can take a good guess, but even then they don't bother to do the math on how much damage they've done overall.
funnily enough one guy did do exactly this and suspected i changed the bosses hp, but when i asked how much he thought the boss had and how much he thought they did before the wizard's spell he was way off on both. i buffed the boss from about 320hp to about 400 while he thought i took it from like 380 to 500.
either way i readily fessed up to it and none of them cared because it was just a good decision and whatever the DM narrates is the truth, so it doesn't actually matter what the original number was.
admittedly i didn't admit my deed until the wizard left because he would've been a bit disappointed to know that it was manufactured to give him the spotlight, but knowing who cares about and/or will catch you on fudging is part of the art of it anyway.
i openly tell all my players that i lie about my rolls, stats, and abilities all the time because people willingly suspend their disbelief as long as i make any effort to pretend that i'm not lying about a specific roll
i'm a centrist half caster personally. 'ate barbs, 'ate wizards
