I feel like a lot of people misinterpret the sentiment behind this phrase. It's not implying a weird zen state where people learn to appreciate an ascetic life. No, rather, it's implying that people will rent, lease, and loan all the shit they already have without a chance to actually own their belongings. There's businesses around today like Rent-A-Center who make millions on this premise, renting out fancy designer electronics to idiots who can't justify a $1000 purchase but can somehow pay $100 a month for years to always have the biggest latest model of tv in their apartment.
That's what's inherently sinister about it. It's implying you will still be happy even though they're bleeding you dry in a significantly more predatory manner.
