It used to be a landmark that you could see from miles away, before of course suburbs started crawling around it.
Think of how Northern Europe looked in the 14th century, most towns were just mudhuds like in the OP picture. And this one town in this climate was so immensly rich that it could just build one church after another as status symbol.
