Works are downstream of true faith, and are the proof of that faith.
You can't "work" your way to Christ, or mitigate the condemnation of sin by doing "good stuff" - you're already guilty of sin, and deserve death, but were spared by Christ's sacrifice... and the only way to accept this gift of salvation is to accept it by faith. Upon accepting this gift and opening yourself to Christ, you will begin to align yourself evermore deeper into this truth, and your behavior and way of life will change - we are to reflect the image to Christ to the world, and this is shown in our transformed character... this is shown in good works.
nor can you "just believe" in Jesus and assume you can just sin and do whatever you want
everything begins and ends in faith
works are a necessary component in the life of a Christian, but not sufficient
even an atheist can do deeds of a charitable good nature, but that doesn't change their condition
only an abiding trust in the merits of Christ can transform the life
sola fide never meant "lol u can just do whatever you want now that you're a Christian"
